HERMAN GORDON

Herman Louis Gordon, 92, died peacefully in Harrisburg on December 15, 2020. Herman was a lifelong "Harrisburger," born to parents, Meyer and Sadie (Williams) Gordon.

He graduated from William Penn High School and what is now Shippensburg University, where he was a walk-on varsity basketball player. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his military service, Herman joined his father and brother to form M. Gordon & Sons, Inc., a commercial painting and decorating corporation that operated for over 50 years.

Herman was a kind and gentle soul who believed in making a difference by giving back to the Jewish community. He grew up playing basketball at the Y and later also handball and racquetball at the JCC, where he was affectionately known as Hymie. He was actively involved in the Harrisburg Jewish community for decades and served as an officer, board member, trustee, and other leadership roles for organizations including the United Jewish Community of Greater Harrisburg, the Jewish Community Foundation of Central Pennsylvania, and the Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg. He was a recipient of the Albert Hursh Leadership Award and was inducted into the Jewish Community Center Sports Hall of Fame. Herman helped preserve Jewish cemeteries in eastern and central Pennsylvania. He was also a proud supporter of the Chisuk Emuna Congregation, where he attended daily minyan and chanted the Rosh Hashanah Haftorah for over 40 years.

His greatest joy in life was spending time with his beloved wife and daughters. Herman also enjoyed traveling with his family and friends and led missions to Israel with his wife, Lois. He was an avid North Carolina basketball and Penn State football fan.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Anna (Talbert) Dubin, Dorothy (Ernest) Swimmer, and Esther (Norman) Katz, his brother J. Yale (Miriam) Gordon and three nephews. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lois Dortch Gordon, and his daughters Marcia and Susan, nieces and nephews and many friends. He will be dearly missed.
