ILEANE HURWITZ

Ileane Singer Hurwitz, of Harrisburg, died on September 27, 2020 at home.

Born on July 17, 1929, she was predeceased by her parents, Abe and Betty Singer, and her brother, Roland Singer.

Ileane married Harold S. Hurwitz, the love of her life, in 1950. They celebrated their 70th anniversary on September 24, 2020.

Family was the most important part of her life, and she was totally devoted to her husband, Harold, children Ricki Hurwitz (Garry Brinton), Kenneth Hurwitz (Chris), and Ann Green (David), her grandchildren Joanna Brinton, Cara Garrison, Talia Brinton, Miles Hurwitz, Paige Hurwitz, Jocelyn Green, and Alyssa Green, great-granddaughters Julianne and Adeline Garrison, and Eliza Galego. She was the hub of a large extended family of Singers, Hurwitzes, & Nadens, as well as a large group of new and lifelong friends.

Ileane was a true Harrisburg girl. Moving from Steelton at age 5, she grew up in a great Uptown neighborhood. She was Salutatorian & Best Girl Athlete of William Penn Class of 1947 and a graduate of Drexel Tech in 1949. She was an outstanding, competitive athlete in any sport or game she attempted, winning varsity letters in tennis, softball, & basketball. She didn’t learn to swim until she was 40, but, into her 80s, was a regular early morning lap swimmer at the JCC. She loved to ride her bike down the path along the river, and was an eager last-minute substitute doubles partner on the Blue Ridge tennis courts. She never “let” her children or grandchildren win a card game.

She was an excellent secretary, working for Simons Insurance and then joining her husband at their business, Reliable Office Products. Ileane was a life member of Beth El Temple Harrisburg, the JCC Sports Hall of Fame, Beth El Temple Sisterhood, Back Alley Gals, Romeo & Juliets, the JCC Senior Adult Club, and Hadassah.

In retirement, she volunteered for Jewish Family Service - Meals on Wheels and Susquehanna Township School District.

A graveside service was held on September 30. Donations in Ileane’s memory may be made to Beth El Temple, 2637 North Front Street, Harrisburg, PA 17110 or the charity of your choice. No flowers please.
