HERBERT BRENNER

Herbert Brenner, originally of Harrisburg, died on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at his home in Fort Myers, Florida. He was 96.

He was the child of Edna and Samuel Brenner and was predeceased by his siblings Bernard Brenner and Ivy Besdin, and by his wife, Sylvia Brenner. He is survived by his 7 children, 13 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.

Herb was a graduate of William Penn High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. His college studies were interrupted by his enlistment in the US armed services during World War II; he served as a corporal in the Air Force in Italy. Following the completion of his studies, he returned to Harrisburg. He was a longtime executive with M. Brenner & Sons before retiring in the early 1990s. He and Sylvia moved to Fort Myers, Florida in 1999.

Herb devoted considerable time, energy, and skill to many community and civic voluntary activities. Among them were his service on the boards and executive committees of the Polyclinic Hospital, Hemlock Girl Scout Council, Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, and a term as president of the United Way. He also served as president, at various times, of Kesher Israel Congregation, the Yeshiva Academy of Harrisburg, the Harrisburg Hebrew High School, and of the Jewish Federation of Harrisburg. He took much of that energy with him to Fort Myers, where he served on various committees of Cypress Cove at HealthPark Florida, including a term as chair of the resident council. He also created and led, for many years, the popular “Current Events” program at Cypress Cove. For most of their time there, Herb and Sylvia were the “mayors” of Cypress Cove.

Private funeral services were held at Kesher Israel cemetery in Harrisburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to Kesher Israel Congregation (Harrisburg), The Silver Academy (Harrisburg), or any other charity.
