HARVEY DANOWITZ

Harvey Danowitz, 85, passed away on Thursday, December 17, 2020.

Harvey was born November 13, 1935 in Harrisburg, to the late Simon Danowitz and Rose Nicoll Danowitz. He graduated from John Harris High School and then went on to study Accounting and Business at the University of Toledo and graduated in 1958. He also proudly served in the ROTC.

After college, he returned to Harrisburg, where he worked for the Internal Revenue Service, then for various firms including Krekstein, Rubin, and Lasday. Harvey's passion for state taxes grew over the years, and he became an expert in Pennsylvania taxes. He served on various committees with the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA). Harvey spent countless hours meeting with the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue and provided testimony to various legislative committees on state tax issues. He was a frequent PICPA Speaker and Chair of the Conference of Pennsylvania Taxes for many years. Harvey had a passion for his profession and his clients. In addition to his state tax work, he also was an active CPA. He provided tax services as a partner at Devaney and Company and most recently with Barbush, Hoffman and Short. He never retired and continued to serve his hundreds of clients and often made house calls to visit with them. Harvey's contributions to the tax and accounting fields were indelible.

Harvey was also active in the Harrisburg Jewish community. As a devoted member of the Chisuk Emuna synagogue, where his father Simon was an institutional member, he served as the treasurer and financial secretary for many years and was also a life member. Harvey was honored as Man of the Year in 2008 by the synagogue for his decades of service. He was also on the board of the Jewish Home of Greater Harrisburg. Harvey loved to travel and visit with friends. He visited Alaska, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Israel, and many places in Europe. Harvey also loved sports. He was also a notorious Penn State Football fan holding season tickets for many years and enjoyed watching games at Beaver Stadium. Harvey was also an avid Duke University Basketball fan. Earlier this year, he travelled to Durham, NC to cheer on the Blue Devils with his son and grandson. Harvey also enjoyed the arts and going to the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra or Hershey Theater.

Harvey was preceded in death by his brothers, Gerald Danowitz, Bernard Danowitz, and Alvin Danowitz, and his sister, Betty Danowitz and stepson, Richard Baum. He is survived by his loving family, wife Barbara and her sons Jay Baum (Sandy) and Paul (Dorie) Baum; daughter Sharon (Brian Goldberg), son Michael (Erica) Danowitz; grandchildren Shoshana Goldberg, Lauren Goldberg, Zachary Goldberg, Andrew Danowitz, Anna Danowitz, Robert Baum, and Ellie Baum. Harvey was a loving husband, brother, father, and grandfather. Of all his achievements, he was most proud of his children and grandchildren.
