Staff Spread Cheer Around the Campus

by Katie Crane

During these unprecedented times, The Campus of the Jewish Home staff and residents are staying positive. Staff are getting creative by writing inspirational notes to residents, planning fun activities, and helping residents contact family and friends. Self-isolation is tough, but The Campus is united to get through it together and keep spirits high.

"Difficult times have helped me to understand, better than ever, the value of family and the value of working together to make it through...and together we will do just that," a Campus resident said.

Residents Skype with family and utilize FaceTime while visitation is restricted. Everyone was happy to see familiar faces. We even took some pictures of residents next to heartfelt notes to family. These pictures were emailed to their loved ones. One relative was so touched that she sent photos for our resident to print and hang in her room. This brought overwhelming joy to her and those around her.

The warmer weather also inspired some special activities like a scenic bus tour in our own backyard, snack time outside in the sun, and door-to -door visits to deliver ice cream treats.

“I wanted everyone on staff to know how much I appreciate the work they're doing. Having my father here may be the safest place for him given the pandemic. I just really wanted everyone to know how much I appreciate you all,” One resident’s daughter said.

Wondering how you can help? The Campus is accepting inspirational notes to staff and residents, staff snack packs for those extra-long shifts (small bags of chips, pretzels, etc.), pocket size hand sanitizers, disinfecting wipes, gloves, and face masks. Call 717-657-0700 to schedule a drop off in our vestibule. Monetary donations are also needed during this tough time and can be made at jewishhomeharrisburg.org/donate or mailing a check to 4000 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17112. All gifts are appreciated.
