Shana Tova and Happy New Year!

The new year is always an exciting time around the JCC, and it also comes with a slate of new opportunities to get involved in the JCC’s Our Sports, Fitness, and Recreation department. There are many ways that aspiring athletes can be involved in activities at the J such as basketball, swim team, Soccer Shots, Girls on the Run, Maccabi Games, racquetball leagues, and a variety of fun activities at camp such as Gaga.  Those less coordinated like myself can take advantage of personal training, spin, yoga, weight lifting and other classes to stay in shape.

Our sports programs are often the first way people get involved with the J and learn about the warm, welcoming community that exists here.  I love seeing the classic photos from past team sports and hearing about the lifelong friendships that were formed.  Participation in team sports help keep people healthy and well, while they build relationships and character. You can explore our youth and adult sports opportunities by talking with Terri Travers at 717-236-9555 x3110 or t.travers@jewishfedhbg.org.

Last month, we sent several athletes to the Maccabi Games in California. Just a couple weeks ago, our annual 5K Walk/Run was held, with the finish line at the JCC. We are always thinking of ways to encourage our members to compete while fostering community.

Have you noticed how much we have grown our personal training options lately? We have five great trainers - John, Bentz, Linda, Bev, and Jeremy and are in the process of expanding. They can work with every skillset from individuals who haven’t seen the inside of a gym in ages to people who are incredibly fit.  Or, you can also take small group fitness classes if you are motivated working with others.  Contact Jeremy Kreiser to learn about the best fitness option for you at 717-236-9555 x3103 or j.kreiser@jewishfedhbg.org.

We are proud to be one of the newest locations to offer Rock Steady Boxing in an effort to fight back against Parkinson’s Disease.  Earlier in the year, we added cycling for those with this condition, as well.  According to Rock Steady’s website,

Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative movement disorder which can cause deterioration of motor skills, balance, speech and sensory function.  The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation estimates there are more than 1 million people in the United States diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and more than 60,000 people are diagnosed each year. Rock Steady Boxing is the first gym in the country dedicated to the fight against Parkinson’s.

If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about this program, contact Linda Skulsky for an initial assessment at 717-236-9555 x3050 or l.skulsky@jewishfedhbg.org.

There is something for everyone at the J.  I look forward to seeing you soon. Please be in touch with me at 717-236-9555 x3104 or j.ross@jewishfedhbg.org
